Responsibilities

CITY SECRETARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The City Secretary is an officer of the City, appointed by City Council. The position of City Secretary is a statutory position required by State law. In addition to the statutory duties of the position, the City Secretary of Jacksboro coordinates board and commission meetings; assists with zoning regulations compliance; and serves as a resource for citizens and a link between citizens and the City organization.

The City Secretary maintains the official records of the City and provides information to the public in accordance with Texas State Law (Public Information Act).

The City Secretary prepares the agenda for all council meetings at the Mayor’s and City Manager’s discretion and maintains the Minutes of those meetings, as well as for Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Zoning Adjustments, Parks and Recreation Board. Posting the Agendas in accordance with Open Meetings Act.

The City Secretary is the Election Official for City elections. The City’s General Election is held the first Saturday in May of each year. All City Council places are 2 year terms being elected “at large” as each represent the entire community. The Mayoral race is held on odd number years, along with Council Places 2 and 4; Places 1, 3 and 5 are held on even numbered years. City Official Candidates apply for place on the ballot through the City Secretary’s office during the filing period beginning in January as set by Texas Secretary of State Elections Division. City voting locations are posted on the City website ELECTIONS PAGE, on the City’s official posting board located at the front door of City Hall, as well as being published in the local newspaper. Voters must register through the Jack County Voter Registrar at least 30 days prior to an election to be able to vote in any election.

The City Secretary assists with Zoning regulation compliance through the permitting approval process and as needed, assists citizens through the process of applying to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Zoning Adjustment.

The City Secretary also processes all permits for alcohol sales per Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission regulations.
