The Police Department has a new officer that attended Police Academy Orientation today, and his first day of the academy is Monday, January 12, 2026. Additionally on Monday, we will swear in our newest officer, Doc Wigington. We welcome both of them to the Police Department and to the bigger City Team. Chief Penny also began the process to apply for multiple grants for FY27 to replace hand-held and in-car radios.
Today, January 9, 2026, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Several departments worked together to assist TXDOT clearing drainage pipes on the bridge next to Sewell Park. TXDOT did not have the appropriate equipment readily available, so we volunteered to help in order to clear the equipment off the bridge sooner and keep traffic flowing.
Parks and Recreation helped Distribution and Collection on the installation of the new water line on Depot Street. They took receipt of a shipment of fuel at the airport. The department is also helping to coordinate the annual Father Daughter Dance scheduled for February 21, 2026, at Twin Lakes activity Center.
In order to speed up the installation of the water line on Depot Street, Distribution and Collection rented a rock saw that arrived on Thursday. The entirety of Depot Street is solid rock, and we were not making as much progress as we would like with the mini-excavator and jack hammer. In addition to the water line, the team responded to twenty-seven (27) calls for service, to include water leaks, wastewater issues, or trash receptacles.
We received the first annual payment from Waste Connections for the projected land fill based on the recently revised Franchise Agreement.
We finally received the entrance permit for the new bulk water station from TXDOT. When we finish installing the water line on Depot Street, we will begin installing the new bulk water station. We will have to request bids for the installation of the construction of the entrance on Highway 3344.
The Street Department installed asphalt on another block of North Jack Street. We also had a meeting with a new supplier for asphalt. Additionally, the Street Department continued to install the new street signs.
The Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer completed six (6) inspections. He also coordinated with a plumber to begin repairs and replacement of the hot water heater at the Fire Department and the hot water heater at Twin Lakes Activity Center.
Our Employee Spotlight of the Week is Mark Ortiz. Mark is one of our newest employees and works in the Street Department. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge not only streets and roads, but also his ability to operate and maintain all of our heavy equipment. He has already proven to be a valuable member of our team.
Our next City Council Meeting is Monday, January 12, 2026, at 5:30 PM.
Respectfully,
Mike S.
