[ARCHIVED] Weekly Activity Report November 3-7

veterans war

The Halloween Trunk-or-Treat at the square was very successful.  We look forward to this event continuing to grow, and encourage organizations and churches to participate.

We are excited to welcome three new employees.  Taylor Foster started with us last week in the Distribution and Collection Department.  Mark Ortiz started this week and is working in the Street Department.  Finally, Jack Mathis returns to the City in the Fire Department.  They all three bring a lot of experience and enthusiasm.

Multiple departments worked together to remove the "Welcome to Jacksboro" sign on South Main Street.  TXDOT is beginning preliminary work on the new overpass at the intersection of Hwy 380 and Hwy 281.  The sign will eventually be relocated once TXDOT has completed the overpass.

The Distribution and Collection Department repaired a water leak on N. 2nd Street.  They also continued to install a new water line on Depot St.  Additionally they responded to fifteen (15) calls for service.

We identified an email phishing scam that was sent to multiple employees.  Someone was impersonating the Mayor and requesting employees to reply to the email.  Fortunately our cyber security training was effective and no one responded to the email.

Twin Lakes Activity Center will reopen to the public on Friday, November 7th.  It was closed last week for a special event.

The Street Department cleared a portion of the drainage ditch on Green Hill.  This will be an ongoing project until we have cleared all the major drainage ditches throughout town.  They also made repairs to Green Hill.

The Animal Shelter continues to remain almost full.  We currently have nine (9) cats.  All of them have been vaccinated for the Feline Distemper that had spread several weeks ago.  None of the cats show any signs of the illness, however we are still waiting before we accept any additional cats.  We have thirteen (13) dogs.  Nine (9) are from the County, and four (4) are from the City.  We were able to send three (3) dogs to three separate rescue organizations.  The Animal Control Officer, with assistance from the Building Inspector, made some minor repairs and maintenance to the shelter.

Parks and Recreation Department mowed several City lots, and continued to trim trees along the road leading to the airport.

The Water Treatment Plant employees met with Garver Engineering to discuss some final issues with the plans for the new treatment plant.  We are currently on hold until USDA finishes their final review, however the government shutdown is slowing that process.

We held a meeting to begin planning for the Christmas Parade.  We encourage as many people as possible to enter a Christmas Float.

We wanted to make everyone aware of a Grocery Gift Card Drive that is being supported by multiple organizations.  The goal is to help recipients purchase items that are not available at the Food Pantry.  If anyone is interested, you can purchase a $25 gift card from Lowe's Grocery, Family Dollar, or Dollar General.  The Drive runs from November 5 - December 10, 2025.  You can drop off the gift cards or monetary donations at the following locations:

  • Live Oak Baptist Church office
  • First Baptist Church office
  • Prosperity Bank in Jacksboro (Jana)
  • Oakridge Oil and Gas
  • Or mail to PO Box 574, Jacksboro, TX 76458

The City will be closed next Tuesday, November 11, 2025, in honor of Veterans Day.

Upcoming Events:

  • November 8, 2025:  Chamber of Commerce Chili Fest on the Square
  • November 11, 2025:  Veterans Day
  • November 14 - 15, 2025:  Fort Richardson State Park Reenactment
  • December 4, 2025:  Christmas Parade - the theme is "Christmas Through the Decades"

Our Employee Spotlight of the Week is Reagan Roberts.  Reagan is one of our two operators at the Water Treatment Plant.  He has played a huge role in the planning process for the new water treatment plant.  He recently single-handedly kept the plant operational when the other operator was on vacation, and he also assists at the Wastewater Treatment Plant while one of the two operators has been gone.  You will also find Reagan assisting other departments whenever needed.

Our next Council Meeting is November 10, 2025.  As a reminder, we only have one Council meeting in November and December due to holidays.

Respectfully,

MICHAEL R. SMITH, Lt Col, USAF (ret)

City Manager
